Skill Upgrading/ Good Practices

The UCBP provided the possibility to collect, improve and distribute experiences and knowledge through the construction of 13 universities in Ethiopia.
International master craftsmen provided intensive on-the-job-training for the workers on UCBP construction sites in trades such as:

  • Masonry,
  • Concrete works,
  • Plumbing,
  • Electricity,
  • Metal works,
  • Finishing works, and
  • Roofing.

These international Skill Up-graders were continuously guiding as technical advisers onsite.

The international Skill Up-graders identified qualified national Skill Up-graders in each trade and trained them accordingly. This enables UCBP to

  • continue upgrading the knowledge and capabilities of skilled and semi- skilled workers in great numbers, and
  • sustain the knowledge after the conclusion of the program.

The international and national Skill Up-graders continuously identified modern construction methods that made traditional building techniques more effective and efficient, reduce production costs, save time and improve the quality of products. These methods are called “good practices” in building construction.
UCBP conducted workshops for construction companies, architects and engineering, local and regional enterprises and cooperatives to introduce these good practices and working procedures for further usages.
UCBP shared these good practices in the booklet “Good Practices for Ethiopia’s construction sector” to sustain knowledge, improvements and experiences gained by an intercultural team. This can support the Ethiopian construction sector on its way to international competitiveness.
