Design and Construction

In UCBP, MH Engineering is responsible for the planning and design of more than 1500 university buildings. GTZ IS coordinates every step of this process- from master planning to architectural, structural, electrical and sanitary design. Each building is tailored to the climate topography and seismology.

Additional architects and engineering companies are involved in UCBP. Throughout the entire program duration, a minimum of 39 architects and engineers benefit from UCBP experts’ capacity development through management and technical trainings, the introduction of latest design and engineering software and individual consultations. Guided by GTZ IS, the architects and engineers suggest planning details for the university buildings such as lecture halls, libraries, dormitories, laboratories and dining halls.

One fundamental element of the planning processes in UCBP is to apply and implement the Cost Efficient Design (CED) methodology. Developed and refined in the context of Ethio-German cooperation, the methodology is established as standard in all UCBP university buildings. The CED:

  • saves money by reducing both construction time and material wastage,
  • allows a rapid construction without compromising quality, and
  • streamlines established principles in construction efficiency.
