Ministry of Education

Established in 1949, the Ministry of Education is the primary government agency responsible for formulating and implementing all national policies, strategies and plans related to education and training.

In June 2003, a new Higher Education Proclamation was approved by the Ethiopian parliament, paving the way for the implementation of new reforms. These reforms include:

• Increasing the autonomy of higher education institutions nationwide
• Introducing new degree courses in response to anticipated labor market needs
• Expanding graduate program enrollments to increase the supply of academic staff
• Setting up pedagogical resource centers nationwide to improve instructional innovation

Through the UCBP, the Ministry is expanding and geographically decentralizing public higher education in Ethiopia.
