Semera is a new city founded just ten years ago and is planned to replace Asita as the new capital of the Afar region. It is located in the hot dry Afar desert, close to the hottest & lowest point in the World: the Danakil Depression 125 meters below Sea level. on based on figures from Central Statistics Agency in 2005, the total population of 833 inhabitants, it is both the geographical and administrative center of the Afar region, located on the Addis Ababa – Djibouti highway. Semera is 580 km away from Addis Ababa.
In the future; the official working language is going to change from Amharic to Afaraf. The average family size consists of eight members, which is larger than other parts of Ethiopia.
