Semera (Samara in Afaraf) is a new city founded just ten years ago. It is located in the hot and dry Afar desert and Ethiopia’s youngest regional capital. With a population of 800 inhabitants, it is both the geographical and administrative center of the Afar region, located on the Addis Ababa – Djibouti highway. Semera is 580 km away from Addis Ababa. The population size of the regions population is estimated 1.4 million.

In the future, the official working language is going to change from Amharic to Afaraf.

The average family size consists of eight members, which is larger than other parts of Ethiopia. This is so because, polygamy is common and allowed by religious customs and tolerated by regional family law.
