Founded in 1943, Mizan Teferi is located in western Ethiopia, 561 km away from Addis Ababa and close to the Sudanese border. Although Amharic is used for administrative purposes, commonly spoken languages are Bench and Keffa. A misty, highland town in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region (SNNPR), Mizan Teferi is the capital of the Bench Maji Zone and hosts some of the most verdant landscapes in Ethiopia.

Many of the town's residents are employed in the nearby Bebeka coffee plantation. Covering a total of 6537 hectares, the Bebeka plantation is Ethiopia's largest and oldest coffee plantation. It produces about 15,000 quintals of Arabica coffee annually. Other locally grown food crops include maize, godere (taro root), and enset. Sorghum, teff, wheat and barley are also farmed to a lesser extent.
