Located about 350 km from the capital, Dila is a town in southern Ethiopia in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR). It is situated east of the Rift Valley escarpment and serves as the administrative capital of the Gedea zone. The SNNPR borders Kenya to the south, the Ilemi Triangle (a region claimed by Ethiopia, Kenya, and Sudan) to the southwest, Sudan to the west, the Ethiopian region of Gambela to the north, and the Ethiopian region of Oromia to the north and east. Besides its capital Awasa and Dila, the region's major cities and towns include Arba Minch, Bonga, Chencha, Sodo, Irgalem, Mizan Teferi, Wends, and Worabe (Silte).

Based on figures from the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia (CSA) published in 2005, the SNNPR has an estimated total population of 14,901,990 consisting of 7,408,993 men and 7,492,997 women. 13,625,000 or 91.4% of the population are estimated to be rural inhabitants, while 1,277,000 or 8.57% are urban; this makes the SNNPR Ethiopia's most rural region. Dila itself has 70.000 inhabitants.
The official language is Gedea, but other commonly spoken languages include Sidama, Oromiffa, and Amharic.

From the capital city, Addis Ababa, to the Kenya border town of Moyale, Dila is a transportation center and is accustomed to foreigners. They are accepted as tourists and investment contributors to the local economy. Dilla is one of the most important coffee producing areas in Ethiopia. Dila is also known for the nearby stelae fields of Tutu Fella and Tutiti.
