Dila is located about 350 km South of Addis Ababa on an elevation of 1970m above sea level in southern Ethiopia in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR). It is situated east of the Rift Valley escarpment and serves as the administrative capital of the Gedea zone. Based on figures from the Central Statistical in 2005, Dila has an estimated total population of 61,114. The official language is Gedea, but other commonly spoken languages include Sidama, Oromiffa, and Amharic. The SNNPR borders Kenya to the south, the Ilemi Triangle (a region claimed by Ethiopia, Kenya, and Sudan) to the southwest, Sudan to the west, the Ethiopian region of Gambela to the north, and the Ethiopian region of Oromia to the north and east. Besides its capital Awasa and Dila, the region's major cities and towns include Arba Minch, Bonga, Chencha, Sodo, Irgalem, Mizan Teferi, Wends, and Worabe (Silte).
Dila is one of the most important coffee producing areas in Ethiopia and known for the nearby stelae fields of Tutu Fella and Tutiti.
