Dese is the capital of the South Wello zone of the Amhara Nations region. Dese is the seventh largest city in Ethiopia. The city is situated 400 km north of Addis Ababa on an elevation around 2500 meters above sea level on the road that connects the capital to Mekelle or Mille. Based on figure from the Central Statistical in 2005, there is an estimated population of 169,106.
Emperor Yohannes IV founded the city and named it ‘Dese’ which means ‘My Joy’ in Amharic. Attractions in Dese include a local museum, which houses a cannon used by Menelik II in 1890.
