Dese is the capital of the South Wello zone of the Amhara Nations region. With a population of 235,000, Dese is the seventh largest city in Ethiopia. Situated 400 km north of Addis Ababa, the city is located on the road that connects the capital to Mekelle or Mille. The Amhara region inhabits around 20,000,000 people, following the data from the Central Statistical Agency (CSA). 50% of the population is men and 50% women. 16,925,000 or 88.5% of the population are estimated to be rural inhabitants, while the rest 11.5% are urban. With an estimated area of 159,173.66 sq. kms, this region has an estimated density of 120 people per square kilometer. Attractions in Dese include a local museum, which houses a cannon used by Menelik II in 1890.
