Also known as Mankorar, Debre Markos is a city and woreda in east-central Ethiopia.

Overview

Set at an altitude of 2410 m in the highlands of the Blue Nile Gorge, Debre Markos was named after its primary church, which is dedicated to St. Mark and constructed in the late 19th century. Historically, however, Debre Markos is best known as the site where a mere 300 members of the combined Ethiopian-Allied army conquered more than 1400 Italian troops in April 1941- a watershed event in the downfall of the Italian occupation.

Debre Markos’s economy depends largely on agriculture. Its climate is ideal for cultivating teff, the main ingrediant for injera, the national staple. The largest employer is the East Gojam Zonal Administration center.

Debre Markos is located 300 km northwest of Addis Ababa. Amharic is the most commonly spoken language.
