Also known as Mankorar, is a city and woreda in east-central Ethiopia Debre Markos is located 300 km. Set at an altitude of 2446m in the highlands of the Blue Nile Gorge. Debre Markos was named after its primary church, which is dedicated to St. Mark and constructed in the 1869. Based on figures from the Central Statistical Agency in 2005 Debre Birhan has an estimated total population of 85,597. Historically, Debre Markos is best known as the site where a mere 300 members of the combined Ethiopian-Allied army conquered more than 1400 Italian troops in April 1941- a watershed event in the downfall of the Italian occupation. Amharic is the most commonly spoken language.
